Home Stay

August 1, 2010 Blog, IL No Comments

We have finally arrived at the 15th Nippon Jamboree but not before we completed in the amazing experience that was home stay. You will get firsthand account from the Explorers’ in the coming days but from the elated faces I saw travelling with me in Water Troop I believe everyone made a lifelong memory and many of our scouts making good friends.

Water Troop went to the city of Osaka which located on the east coast about two and a half hours on the Bullet Train south of Tokyo. It did take 7 hours to travel from Nagano by coach but we also stopped every two hours for a break. Once we arrived at the government building reception, we were met by lots of scouts and paired up with our home stay hosts. The ho ho’s were as you would expect situated all around Osaka with some travelling as far as an hour away from the meet up place.

From the stories that were told afterwards it seems most people did many different things in their short time in Osaka mainly sightseeing, shopping and lots of eating. In fact if my experience was anything to go by they were positively spoilt rotten and treated like royalty.

We’d all like to wish a (belated) very Happy Birthday to Jordon F (16) and Daniel L (17), and also to Charles Merry (15).

Today the temperature here at the camp reached a staggering 38*C!! But as you know it will take a lot more than that to put a stop to this contingent. We are all keeping hydrated and the food is designed to help us rehydrate faster.

It’s now at the end of day 5 at the camp and we have now finished our rolling programme. Wind troop were the finial group to take the journey down to the village, Earth troop did “The Challenge”, Water Troop their training and finally selections for the Olympics and Fire played golf and enjoyed a half day.

Believe it or not but your wonderful children have been frantically running around trying to wash all their own clothes in the washing machines we have here. More surprisingly it was the boys who started this trend!

Hi All back home
Having a great time in Japan. Just about getting acclimatised to the heat and humidity here. The food is better than i anticipated.
I am off to the local GP today with Helen who forgot to pack her eye drops, so will be able to experience how the health care system operates here in Japan.
Water troop are off on a walk today into the local village to look at the Temples, shops and stock up on some sugar snacks no doubt.
Unable to get any signal on my mobile so not able to call home as often as Vikie would like me to. Hope you are not missing me too much. Will write again later in the week before we move on.

Love to all at home, and lots of kisses for you too,

Liz, Water Troop Leader

The weather must be going to some of the boys heads….
Because they asked for a makeover. It started off just with painting their nails then it lead to a little bit of face pampering and you can tell by some of the photos that they were not just getting into it they loved it a little too much!!!!
We’re having a great time and oh yeah don’t forget to check those pretty photos out ;-)
Oh yeah and please let us know what you thought of our handy work, it would be a great laugh when we see what you think.

Bye for now

Jade, Bethan, Emma and Olivia Wind Troop

Hello again everyone at home!
I had a fab birthday yesterday and everyone was saying ‘happy birthday’ all day very sweet and i also received a card and some ice pop thing from the leaders on behalf of everyone. Thanks :-) Also we walked to a little village near the camp site and found some interesting temples and a very very very nice sweet shop which people bought me some birthday presents the best was some nuts covered in chocolate :P
The weather can vary quite rapidly from lovely and sunny to thunderstorm the next day (as I found out walking to the little village :-)
Looking forward to the steak and chips when I’m home and me and Matthew have decided to go to the Woodthorpe with all NMX when we arrive home or stop at McDonalds at a service station on the motorway?

Activity Day 1 - 25thThe County Commissioner was so overjoyed by the taste of Green Tea that he has now declared every meeting in the entire county Green Tea is to replace traditional tea and coffee with immediate effect.

We have had some the positive feedback from locals who also use the centre where we stay, stating they were impressed by how the Explorers interacted with each other, helping each other to learn how to do things the Japanese way and all unsupervised.
